Ben Robinson

Fade In:
Tracking shot of an old train going down a track late at night followed by a voiceover while the scene slowly goes onto the empty train carriages.  Different shots of a town showing graffiti and vandalism.
Noel (V.O)
Same old routine week after week, boring town with nothing to do apart from either going out causing trouble, getting pissed or sitting in your bedroom on your computer playing video games.  I think it’s time for a change.

QUICK-CUT to train station following Noel walking out of the station, dark cold night non-diegetic music playing
Alex (V.O)
Working all the time, getting money blowing it on stupid things that’s the story of my life and many others
QUICK-CUT to the local supermarket with a point of view shot from the front of a trolley approaching a character
Barry (V.O)
College work, exams and all the rest of the stress is just a number of things that we have to put up with
QUICK-CUT to the local college with a character on sat behind a desk daydreaming while listening to the teacher
Mr Grieves
Barry? Are you listening?
Barry
Yes! Sorry just had other things on my mind…
QUICK-CUT to earlier on in the day where all three characters are gathered together in the town centre all sat in a busy takeaway

Noel
You’ll never believe it lads I’ve just got 60 quid!
Barry
What from? Who from?
Noel
The dole 60 quid for sitting on my arse all day doing what I want I can’t complain at that one so what’s the plan for tonight so I can spend this wonga?
Alex
Think I might stay in, got to be up early tomorrow for an early shift
Noel
Fuck that, you’re 20 not 50 we need to be out there on the ‘sesh!’
Barry
Sounds good but I only have a tenner, student life an all that
Noel
You’ll be ‘reyt, but we can’t have Alex selling us out all because he has work tomorrow
Alex
Fine chill out lads I’ll be there
Barry
‘Yolo’
Noel
What the fuck did you just say?
Barry
Yolo? You Only Live Once it’s a saying…
Noel
A saying for if you’re bent or have a screw loose, never say that again
Barry
Right sorry, where we going then to the club?

Alex
Yea sounds good this time no more trouble I can’t be arsed with all the shit like last time
Noel
The music is shit but there’s plenty of talent lets do it
QUICK-CUT to the later on in the evening where all three characters are in the pub
Noel
Right let the fun begin…
Sally (Barmaid)
You got any I.D?
Noel
I’m 21! But here…
Sally (Barmaid)
I still have to check, so what are you having lads?
Noel
Three pints of larger cheers
As all the characters start drinking the sound of loud police sirens and a police helicopter can be heard outside
Alex
What do you think that is?  Sounds like something serious and close!
Barry
Lets check it out it’s not exactly exciting in here
QUICK-CUT to outside the pub on the streets where there are lots of Police in riot clothing
Noel
Wow must be something big lets get closer
Police Officer 1
Sorry lads you can’t go any further
Noel
Why?  It’s a free country what’s happened?
Police Officer 1
It might be but at this time you aren’t going up this road!
Alex
Come on Noel leave it
All of the characters walk away while the loud sounds of smashing glass and cheering can be heard in the distant
Alex
Come on there’s another way round
Barry
Are you two stupid, thick whatever he said don’t go in or any further
Noel
I’m not missing this something finally going on and not seeing it!
QUICK-CUT to up the street where there is a small riot taking place between two sets of football fans
Barry
I’m going home I don’t fancy me head getting kicked in or being burnt to death by a bunch of bald headed idiots
Alex
Stay! Don’t be a big girl
Noel
Here lets go down here…
QUICK-CUT to a dark back alley between houses with a bright light in the distance
Barry
What’s that light?
Noel
It looks like a light
Alex
Obviously!

Noel
Shut up Alex let’s get down there and check it out!
As all the characters are slowly walking down the back alley a hooded character runs past
Hooded Man
Run!
Barry
Come on aren’t you guys listening to him?!
Noel
No we have come this far now we have to check it out
As they approach the bright white light the characters are all blinded and dazed
QUICK-CUT to Noels’ house where all the characters are sat on the chairs asleep and are awaken by the TV showing a bright white light
Noel
What the hell has just happened?!
Alex
Was that a dream?
Barry
It couldn’t be how did we get here?
Noel
You lads remember what I did?  Walking towards that bright light in that ginnel now ending up in my house?
Alex
Yes!
Barry
It’s impossible things like this just don’t happen
Noel
Does anyone else feel weird? I feel pissed but haven’t even drunk anything

Alex
No nothing?
Barry
Right I think we need to find out what that was in the back alley
Noel
Yea but how?
Alex
Lets go back there now?
Noel
Fine! Come on quick!
QUICK-CUT to the back ally
All the characters approach the back ally with caution
Noel
There’s nothing here!
Alex
Keep looking there must be something
Barry
Even the football crowd have gone there’s just no explanation for this
Police Officer approaches the group of lads
Police Officer 1
So what are you boys doing down here?
Noel
Aren’t you the one that told us to go away before? What happened to the football fans?
Police Officer 1
Football fans? I have no idea what you are on about

Barry
Yea there was a big riot before we saw it?
Police Officer 1
Well you’re clearly on drugs or something as it’s all been quiet
Alex
No seriously!
Police Officer 1
Now there’s nothing happened now can you please go home or go somewhere else apart from hanging around the streets and in ally ways
Noel
Fine lets go back to mine
 QUICK-CUT back to Noels’ house
Barry
Well it can only be one thing then…
Alex
Go on….
Barry
We teleported or somehow used some sort of unrealistic power
Noel
Impossible!
Alex
It might sounds like a load of bollocks but he has got a point, how else could we have got from there to here without even walking?
Noel
There will be something!
Alex
I saw this show once where something like this happened and they all had different ‘powers’

Noel
‘Powers’?!  You’re making us sound like we’re Batman and Robin!  Grow up
Alex
Really? Well watch that
Alex picks up a lighter from the table and throws it straight at Noels’ head
Noel
Oww! What do you think you’re doing you dickhead?!
Noel then gets up going to attack Alex just as he does…
QUICK-CUT to Alexs’ to a small bedroom which is Alex’s bedroom
Alex
Where am I?  This is my room!
QUICK-CUT back to Noel’s house where him and Barry are sat there
Barry
He has gone again?! It must be him
Noel
Wow now I am starting to believe your rubbish, quick ring him!
Barry gets his mobile phone out to ring Alex
QUICK-CUT back to Alexs’ house
His phone is ringing in his pocket which he rushes to get
Alex
Hello, you will never believe it!
QUICK-CUT back to Noel’s house
Barry
Where are you?!
QUICK-CUT back to Alexs’ house
Alex
Back in my house I did it again! It’s me I must be able to do it!
QUICK-CUT back to Noel’s house
Barry
Get back round here then!
QUICK-CUT back to Alexs’ house
Alex
I can’t control it I don’t know how it happens?!
QUICK-CUT back to Noel’s house
Barry
Well Walk
QUICK-CUT back to Alex’s house
Alex
Right I’ll be back round in a bit
QUICK-CUT to Noels’ house
Noel
Well if he can do something I’m sure we can
Barry
I think it has something to do with that light!
Noel
Yea not a bad thought! What do we do?  Go out still hi the town
Barry
Yeah! Still would be good I’m up for it as it’s a Saturday
Alex comes into the room
Alex
You see it lads?! I was here then I was gone
Noel
Yea we saw! That doesn’t mean I still won’t smack you

Alex
That’s what it must be at the minute when I’m in danger I move places somehow!
Noel
Just shows how much of a wimp you are!
Alex
Shut up I don’t see you doing anything special
Noel
You never know in time anyway coming town?  See what happens there you never know you might be disappearing all the time with the sight of girls
Alex
Aha very funny! And Yeah I will do
Noel
Lets see what magic we’re in for tonight…

TV Show Dramas Research

 Heroes Season 1 Episode 1

After watching the first ten minutes from the episode i have already seen lots f different story lines, characters, locations and seen how the storyline is developing.

Characters -Peter Petrelli, Dr Suresh, Noah Bennet, Nicki, Claire and Nathan

Locations - New York, India classroom and apartment, Las Vegas in a house and Texas.

Story Lines - Peter thinks he has some sort of power, also hints of romance between him and Simone.  Dr. Suresh who finds out his father has been killed and discovers his dads research on powers.  Nicki has no money has two men chasing her probably over debts.  Claire jumps off a bridge not damaging herself or any bone in her body.

The characters all perform differently most are very suspicious and act in a way that makes us ask enigmas.

The Inbetweeners Season 3 Episode 2

After watching the first ten min minutes of The Inbetweeners Season 3 Episode 2.  I have already seen different story lines, characters, locations and seen how the TV show is developing.

Characters - Will, Jay, Simon, Neil, Jay's dad, Tara, Donovan and Will's mum

Locations - Caravan in England, local housing estate, School and Will's house

Story lines - All four characters main aim is to attract girls, Simon has a new girlfriend and decides to go to a gig with her and the other three main characters.  They also all are intending to take drugs to make themselves seem 'cool' and show off.

Performance - Each main characters acts in a different way, firstly they all act like school children as that's what they are playing on the stereotypical teenagers.  Will acts smart and likes to dictate the group.  Neil acts stupid and is the dopey character in the show.  Simon is obsessed with girls and the performance shows this with the awkwardness with girls.  Jay likes to lie and performs in a way the audience can tell he is lying  The language also used throughout is directed at a younger target audience.

Development

After getting the results from the Questionnaire and other peoples advice I have decided to change the number of main characters from four to three as this will make it easier to focus on them and I will be able to focus on the characters in more detail and build different story lines around them all.

The characters I will be including are the following:

Noel - Has no job claims benefits from the government, often takes drugs mainly cannabis.  He will be the main character of the TV show and also finds he has powers like the rest of the characters.

Barry - Seen to be the 'nerd' of the three he is 18 still in college full time while living at home with his parents.

Alex - Works full time at the local paper shop in the area earns lots of money but also likes to lie and make things up to make him look better than he actually is.  He will have powers he will be the first one to notice this and i will develop the other characters in realising they have powers too.

Script Research 2

Life on Mars Episode One

INT. SAM’S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - DAY 1/1 07:08
1

Close-up - photograph. A small boy - 4 or 5 wearing an
oversized policeman’s hat. Freckles. Toothy grin.

Reflected in the glass of the photo - a dozen separate News
24 items explode onto a plasma screen.

The widescreen TV spews up a giddy-making cocktail of current
affairs. These images usher in a fast set of very
contemporary TITLES.

The TV with Dolby 5.1 dominates one half of the apartment and
holds the attention of SAM TYLER. This room with its beams
and varnished wooden floor has been converted from some vast
Victorian factory.

SAM himself is smart, lithe, mid-30’s. If he were a flavour
he’d be spearmint. He is talking into his mobile and
negotiating the News 24 menu simultaneously. Girlfriend MAYA
cradles her coffee, watching him.

SAM
If we get the go-ahead I want basepoint
to be at the cross-roads ...

MAYA
Sam ..
He doesn’t appear to hear her.

SAM
.. the suspect was positively id’d
by the victim of the assault.
Afterwards I want SOCO through
every inch of the house. And I’m
going to apply for the right to
hold him for 72 hours if necessary
... Yes, I’m expecting to get it
...

MAYA
Sam?

He snaps the phone shut. Holds up two identical blue ties.

MAYA
The blue one.

SAM
Good choice.

MAYA
Sam, can we ...?

His phone rings. He shrugs - sorry. Has to take it.

SAM
(into mobile)
Sam Tyler ...

MAYA walks sadly out of the room.

He glances at her as she leaves - feels bad about avoiding a
conversation. Turns his attention back to the phonecall.

SAM
We’re heading out there now...
(dialogue continues over top of sc
2) I want the Exclusion Zone to run
from the junction to the end of the
street. We’re not losing this one
because of sloppiness.

2
INT. SAM’S APARTMENT - BATHROOM - DAY 1/1 07:09 2

MAYA sits on the loo (seat down) with her own phone. She can
hear SAM babbling ten to the dozen outside. She finishes
leaving a phone message.

The script is also laid out the same way as the first script i researched with the location being in bold and at the top of the page before the text begins.  This script uses mainly the narrative to guide the audience towards meaning with very little dialogue between characters.  In the script there is very little technical codes with no mention of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds or music and no mention of camera angles and other technical codes.  The dialogue is also aligned in the centre of the page making it easier to read and separating it from the other scene changes and narrative of what is happening in the scene.

SHAMELESS

FADE IN:

EXT. CHICAGO UPTOWN - NIGHT

Blazing fire. Public bonfire. POPS and BANGS of fireworks. A
MALE VOICE begins over luminous faces - adults and kids -
that the CAMERA picks out of the crowd in the bonding glow.

FRANK (V.O.)
Nobody's saying this neighborhood's
the Garden of Eden, hell some
people say God avoids this place
altogether, but it's been a good
home to us, to me and my kids, who
I'm proud of; 'cause every single
one of them reminds me a little bit
of me. Fiona, my rock, a huge help.

FIONA, attractive, but not gorgeous, eighteen, laughing.

FRANK (CONT'D)
Has all the best qualities of her
mother -- except she’s not a raging
psycho bitch.

QUICK-CUT to Fiona with two Kleenexs and two kids, put’s a
tissue to each kid’s nose and orders “Blow!”. They do.

FRANK (CONT'D)
Lip, smart as a whip. Straight A’s
and the honor roll. And people
thought when I dropped him on his
head it was a bad thing.
LIP, sixteen, handsome, athletic, drinking a brown-bagged
Pabst tallboy, no doubt lifted from some 7-11.

FRANK (CONT’D)
Boy’s definitely going somewhere --

QUICK-CUT of Lip, charging STRAIGHT AT and over us, followed
by two Chicago cops, in heated, sweaty pursuit.

FRANK (CONT’D)
Ian, industrious, conscientious,
ambitious,
incredible work ethic.

IAN, fifteen, smiling, a little goofy, instantly likeable.
2.

FRANK (CONT’D)
Don’t have a
clue where he got that
from. I’m no biologist, but he
looks a bit like my brother, he and
the ex were close. Wants to be a
paratrooper.

QUICK-CUT of Ian in ROTC uniform, seriously working a wooden
rifle in close-order drills on a weedy playground.

FRANK (CONT’D)
Girls are going to love this guy.
Carl... Carl...
CARL, eleven. Shaved head, also drinking from a brown bag --
here’s hoping there’s a Fanta Orange hiding in there.

FRANK (CONT’D)
I don’t really know that much about
Carl... Oh, he’s got
beautiful
hair, fetches top dollar at the wig
shop. We don’t tell the wig lady
he’s a magnet for lice. Debbie!
Sent by God, a total angel, don’t
know what we’d do without her.

DEBBIE, ten. Hooting and hollering at the fire, holding her
toddler brother, LIAM, in her arms.

FRANK (CONT'D)
Raises money for UNICEF year-round,
some of which she turns in.

QUICK-CUT of Debbie, sitting on her bed, shaking change out
of an upside down, much-used, orange UNICEF box.

FRANK (CONT’D)
Liam, gonna be a
star --

QUICK-CUT to the toddler Liam, wearing a diaper and nothing
else, coming straight at us down a hallway, in the midst of a
SCREAMING, head-banging TANTRUM.

FRANK (CONT’D)
-- once Medicade agrees to cover
the Ritalin.
(and)
Kev and Veronica,
fantastic
neighbors!

KEV, thirty, handsome, none too bright, arms wrapped tightly
around VERONICA. Thirty-four, black, sexy, vivacious, tank
top at least two sizes too small.
3.

FRANK (CONT'D)
There’s nothing they won’t do for
each other...or too each other.

QUICK-CUT to Kev pulling a red ball out of his mouth,
Veronica behind him in leather Catwoman mask. He grins.

KEV
Didn’t hurt half as much as I
thought it would... Your turn.

FRANK (VO)
Love
to fuck. I never realized how
little sex I was having ‘til V and
Kev moved in next door. And me...

Finally, a face to go with the voice. Forties, glassy-eyed.
Long, unkempt hair, Army surplus jacket, tattered Van Halen
World Tour ‘84
T-shirt. Hoisting his sixth or seventh 40 of
the night as SIRENS build in the distance.

FRANK (CONT’D)
Frank Gallagher, father, teacher,
mentor. Captain of our ship. We may
not have much, but the kids can all
think for ourselves, for which they
have me to thank, and all of us, to
a man, know first and foremost the
most vital necessity in this life --
we know how to party!

The SIRENS are closer now. The crowd finally begins to
disperse, Frank among the last to go. As the CAMERA pulls
away from him, we SLOWLY REVEAL - not a bonfire - but a
burning abandoned car! And they weren't fireworks but
exploding spray cans kids have been tossing into the blaze.

Fire engines and Chicago PD cars speed onto the scene as the
local community scatters to avoid arrest leave, flipping the
finger and yelling obscenities at the killjoy cops as we --

CUT TO:

INT. GALLAGHER HOUSE - MORNING

In this script which is the pilot for the UK drama Shameless.  The script tells you when the show fades in the location of where the script is taking place is in bold before the dialogue takes place.  What is happening in the scene is left aligned and anything that is loud and to cause excitement is in capital letters.  All the dialogue is aligned in the centre of the page with the characters name in capitals above the text.  There is the use of "QUICK-CUT" which shows what the camera is cutting to in the scene.

Script First Draft

It’s Grim Up T’North

Location – Dark, Rainy Night in the streets of Mill Hill, Blackburn.

Characters- Noel, Barry, Alex
Start the episode with a long camera shot of the town of Blackburn.  Non diegetic modern music is playing and we have fast edit showing all the graffiti and poorly looked after building in the area.  The clip then edits to a wide show with the camera following three characters from behind.
All three characters are slowly walking down the street.  With the camera slowly following them when the characters start to speak the non diegetic music fades out and the camera focuses on the characters faces.
Noel – (Currently smoking a cigarette) So what are we gonna do now then lads?
Alex – I don’t know there is fuck all to do in this town!
Barry – There is things to do it’s just we don’t have the money to do it
Noel – Like what?... Drink White Lightning, take drugs and scout the talent?  You don’t need much money to do them, I mean my dole money gets me through all of that.
(Alex bursts out laughing)
Barry- (Camera focuses on the disgust and sickened facial expressions on his face) Well there is that but I could think of better things to spend my money on
Alex- Yea like books you nerd!
Barry – Well that is an option…
Noel – Right shut up lady’s what are we doing?
(As the characters are in discussion two police cars and an ambulance come racing through the streets past the characters with the use of a tracking shot Camera Angle.)
Alex – wow we need to check that out
Noel & Barry – Yea!
(The characters quickly jog following the police cars and ambulance, smoke can be seen in the distance)
(While the characters are running towards the smoke and fire a hooded man is running the other way)
Hooded Man – You don’t wanna go down there lads it’s all kicking off!
Noel- Why what’s going on?
Hooded Man – It’s like a riot, animals!
Barry- Who?!
Hooded Man – It’s football fans I think, Burnley vs Blackburn it’s horrific.  Stay away!
(The man then quickly jogs away, the camera focuses on the three characters who all have mixed emotions and facial expressions)
Barry- I’m going home I don’t fancy me head getting kicked in or being burnt to death by a bunch of bald headed idiots
Noel- Stay you big girl! Aw can’t handle a bit of violence?
Alex- Yea stay you wimp we have to check this one out
Barry- Fine any trouble and I’m off
(As the characters get closer they hear the diegetic noise of glass smashing, cheering and shouting coming from the train station)
Alex- This is it, no backing away now
(As they keep walking closer to the train station they hear the noises getting louder and see a crowd running towards them in the distance)
Barry-Run!
Noel-Shit
(The crowd quickly catch up to the characters and surround them)
Football Hooligan 1 – So you’re Blackburn boys too are you?
Barry- We don’t even like football
Noel- I do!
Alex- (Whispering) Shut up are you trying to get us killed?
Football Hooligan 2 – Lets teach the lads a lesson!
(The crowd cheer and run towards the characters who are all huddled together, as the crowd gets closer and closer the characters are froze together but then the clip edits to a house where the characters have suddenly transported to who are still in the same position, clothing as they were when the football crowd were running towards them)
Noel-What the hell?
Alex-Where are we?
Barry- How is this even possible? Am I dreaming?
Noel- This is my house you clowns but we was just…
Alex-On the street about to get are heads kicked in thanks to you! But how did we get here?
Barry-Transported
Noel-Rubbish there is no such thing and how could we have done that?
Barry- There is no explanation
Alex-You’ve been watching too much T.V and is that what they teach you at college nowadays
Barry-Well how is this even possible we were at the train station now we are here in Noel’s house!
Noel-This is doing my head in!  I need a drink and a bit of “waci baki!”
(Noel then walks into the kitchen and returns with a can of beer while smoking cannabis)
Barry-Well that isn’t going to help!  We can’t just forget about this and pretend it never happened, one of us must have done it must have the power to do it
Alex- Now you’re starting to creep me out, you sound like a comic book
Barry-You tell me what else it could be then…
Alex- Erm….
(As both characters are arguing Noel stays silent and blacks out)
Barry- Noel?!
Alex- Shit he has fainted! Quick get him up!
(The characters place him on the armchair in his front room, he slowly comes back to opening his eyes)
Noel- I saw…
Barry- Saw what?
Noel- The crowd again
Alex- The Football crowd?
Noel- Yes! Just before we ended up here I saw them running towards us then nothing like a flashback
Barry- It must be you, you must have done it

Questionnaire Results

1.  What is your favourite TV show?
From the results I have gained from the first question i have realised that "The Inbetweeners" and "Friends" are the most popular favourite TV show from the people I asked to complete my questionnaire.  This is good as my TV show will be based around "The Inbetweeners"

2.  What is your favourite genre of TV show? (Choose two)
Looking at the results of this question I have discovered that Comedy is the preferred genre out of the target audience i asked to complete my questionnaire.  Secondly the genre action was the second most favourite these results are good as my TV show will fit into these two genres.

3.  What is your favourite TV channel? (Choose one)

The results show the most preferred channel is Comedy Central i will take this into consideration as my initial ideas were for the show to be broadcast on Channel 4 but looking at the results Comedy Central seems to be a more viewed channel out of the other channels.

4.  Which is your favourite character from the show "The Inbetweeners"?

This question was to determine which sort of character i would focus on in my TV show as they all have different personality's.  The results show that the two characters Will McKenzie and Neil Sutherland are the most popular so I will try to base my characters around these two.

5.  In question four why are they your favourite character?

From asking this question i know what the audience want from a character and that is them to be funny and make them laugh.  In my TV show I aim to do this with making the characters as funny as i can while also making them serious and have other characteristics.

6.  Which town or city in the north of England do you think is the worst for crime?

From these results I can see that the majority of people think that the place Shadsworth which is a area in Blackburn is the worst for crime.  My TV show is going to be based in Blackburn but will be based in Mill Hill another area of Blackburn which is also like Shadsworth.

7.  What time of the day do you prefer to watch TV?

These results show that all of the people i asked do not prefer to watch TV in the day or morning so my TV show will be on at Night.  Also most people prefer to watch TV after 9pm my show will have to be on after this time anyway because of the content that will be in my show.

8.  What is the most popular type of drug that appears in TV shows you watch?

The results show that Cannabis is the drug which appears in most TV shows that the people I asked watch.  I will therefor use the drug in my TV show with also the use of alcohol which is the second most viewed drug in current TV shows that people watch.

9.  What is your preferred length of a TV episode?

The results for this question show that most people prefer a episode to go on for around 1 hour so my TV show episodes will be 1 hour long this means i will have plenty of time to fit any content i need into the episode.

10.  What do you dislike about the TV show Shameless (Violence, Drugs, Storylines)?

Most of the people i asked to complete the questionnaire did not watch Shameless but for the people that did one person said the storylines aren't realistic.  In my TV show i will try to make to storylines very realistic so people can relate to them.
